Spinning at 7,200 RPM with an 8.5ms average seek time and a 1.2 GBps external data transfer rate, it's engineered to support server workloads, backup operations, and archival storage tiers with a balanced approach to speed and economy. The 12Gb/s SAS interface provides a stable, high-throughput connection, which is exactly what ProLiant Gen10 through Gen12 servers are built around.
What sets this drive apart is its Helium-sealed design, which reduces power consumption and improves storage density, making it ideal for high-capacity enterprise environments. Although hard drives are sealed, they have air inside. Air can create turbulence-induced vibrations which can limit the storage density of HDDs. Helium-filled drives virtually eliminate turbulence because helium is 1/7th as dense as air. This lower density allows the read/write mechanism to spin more easily and precisely, with less drag. Less internal turbulence means the drive platters can be closer together, allowing more platters and increasing the capacity potential in the same space. Less turbulence also means helium drives tend to use less power, and run cooler and quieter. Power consumption is just 5.3W at idle and 8.5W during random read/write operations.
The drive features 512e Advanced Format, ensuring compatibility with both legacy 512-byte and modern 4KiB-aligned operating systems and applications. It also features Digitally Signed (DS) firmware, which provides the security and assurance that drive firmware comes from a trusted source and protects against malicious attacks. As a Midline (MDL) drive, it offers an ideal balance between performance and cost — more robust than desktop drives with better reliability for 24/7 operation, yet more affordable than high-performance Enterprise models.
