From HPE
The HPE P9M82A (Spare Part: 868230-001) is a genuine 10TB SAS Midline hard drive built specifically for HPE MSA storage environments where massive capacity and dependable performance are essential. Spinning at 7,200 RPM with a 256MB cache buffer and a sustained data transfer rate of up to 1.2 GBps, it's engineered to support data-intensive workloads, backup operations, and archival storage tiers with a balanced approach to speed and economy. The 12Gb/s SAS interface provides a stable, high-throughput connection, which is exactly what MSA storage arrays are built around.
What sets this drive apart is its unique MSA hot-plug tray with an interposer connector that is different from standard ProLiant drives. HPE MSA2 controller enclosures and large form factor expansion enclosures accept unique HPE SAS disk drive modules with different firmware and different trays than other HPE storage arrays and ProLiant servers. The disk drives have SAS interposers attached to the back which convert the native dual-port SAS interface to an SCA-40 connector — the interposer acts as a signal filter and port relocator to connect to the MSA2's proprietary backplane. The drive features dual-port SAS connectivity for built-in redundancy and is hot-swappable, meaning it can be replaced without shutting down the system — minimizing downtime during maintenance.
Additionally, the drive features a helium-sealed design. Although hard drives are sealed, they have air inside. Air can create turbulence-induced risk vibrations which can limit the storage density of HDDs. Newer helium-filled drives virtually eliminate turbulence because helium is 1/7th as dense as air. This lower density allows the read/write mechanism to spin more easily and precisely, with less drag. Less internal turbulence means the drive platters can be closer together, allowing more platters and increasing the capacity potential in the same space. Less turbulence also means helium drives tend to use less power, and run cooler and quieter.
Because this is a genuine HPE component rather than a generic or rebadged drive, it carries original HPE MSA firmware and a genuine HPE serial number. That matters when you're replacing a drive in a live MSA storage array — mismatched or unverified parts can cause array dropouts or degraded performance.
This HPE P9M82A 10TB SAS hard drive is built specifically for HPE MSA storage architecture with a unique hot-plug tray and interposer connector that is different from standard ProLiant drives. It is designed for the following MSA storage systems.

Compatibility Notes:
When you're sourcing a replacement drive for an active MSA storage array, the difference between a genuine part and an unverified clone shows up the first time you need to rebuild a RAID set. The HPE P9M82A is HPE-manufactured with MSA-optimized firmware, a 256MB cache buffer, 512e Advanced Format, a genuine HPE security sticker, and the unique MSA hot-plug tray and interposer connector included. This means it carries the firmware and mechanical tolerances your MSA controller already expects — no compatibility guesswork, no risk of a failed rebuild because of a mismatched drive. Here's what makes this HPE P9M82A 10TB SAS hard drive worth choosing over a cheaper, unverified alternative:
This HPE P9M82A 10TB SAS hard drive fits teams maintaining MSA storage infrastructure who need massive, dependable storage without downtime. Common deployment scenarios include:
